Abstract

Purpose

To determine optimum design and operation parameters for ternary batch distillation under fixed product demand.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, two different scenarios are considered. In the first scenario, the column specification (in terms of number of plates and vapour load) and product demand are given and the optimum operation policy is determined. In the second scenario, with a fixed batch time and product demand, the optimal design (in terms of number of plates and vapour load) and operation policy (in terms of reflux ratio profile) are determined. In both scenarios, maximisation of a profit function reflecting capital cost, operating cost and penalty due to under/over production and customer dissatisfaction is considered. A detailed dynamic model consisting of mass and energy balances with rigorous thermodynamic property calculation model is used. The optimisation problem is solved using modified simulated annealing algorithm.

Findings

Two ternary mixtures leading to easy and difficult separation were considered. The off‐cut production and recycling has been found to be more beneficial for difficult separation mixture than that for easy separation mixture. The net profit increases with over production more than under production of the products. This is because of the penalty imposed for customer dissatisfaction. It is better to over produce, as that will achieve the maximum profit and (at the same time) satisfy the customer. Finally, for a typical case study, the net profit with optimum design is found to be about 25 per cent more compared to the net profit obtained with fixed design.

Originality/value

Optimal design and operation of multicomponent batch distillation has received limited attention in the past. Also, these studies were not geared for fixed product demand scenario. The optimisation problem formulation considered in the past, led to unlimited production of products (based on the assumption that all products produced are saleable) to maximise the profitability. Also, there were no penalties for over or under production of the desired products, production of off‐cuts and customer dissatisfaction due to not meeting the order (amount of products and delivery time, etc.). In this work, for the first time, these issues are addressed in the optimisation problem formulation.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stabilization of unstable periodic orbits of Chua’s system using adaptive fuzzy sliding mode controllers with moving surface.

Design/methodology/approach

For this aim, the sliding mode controller and fuzzy systems are combined to achieve the stabilization. Then, the authors propose a moving sliding surface to improve robustness against uncertainties during the reaching phase, parameter variations and extraneous disturbances.

Findings

Afterward, the authors design a sliding observer to estimate the unmeasurable states which are used in the previously designed controller.

Originality/value

Numerical results are provided to show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify barriers toward the adoption of blockchain (BC) technology in Indian health-care industry and also examines the significant issues of BC applications in health-care industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The barriers of the study are identified by two phases including the review of literature and semistructured interviews with hospital staff and administration operating in India. The experts (N = 15) are being taken from top-level management, IT experts and patients from the hospitals. The study implemented integrated total interpretative structural modeling-FUZZY-Cross-impact matrix multiplication applied to classification (TISM-FUZZY-MICMAC) methods for identifying the interrelationship among the barriers.

Findings

A total of 15 barriers have been determined in the Indian health-care industry through discussion with the selected experts. TISM is applied to develop multilevel structure for BC barriers. Further, FUZZY-MICMAC has been used to compute driving and dependent barriers. The findings suggest that low awareness related to legal issues and low support from high level of management have maximum driving power.

Research limitations/implications

The present study applies multicriterion approach to identify the limited barriers in BC adoption in health care. Future studies may develop the relationship and mark down the steps for implementation of BC in health-care setting of a developing economy. Empirical study can be conducted to verify the results along with selected case studies.

Practical implications

The present study identifies the BC adoption barriers in health-care industry. The study examines the pertinent issues in context to major support required, bottlenecks in adoption, key benefits of adoption planning and activities. The technology adoption practices are expected to provide applications such as distributed, secured medical and clinical data and patient centric systems that will enhance the efficiency of the health-care industry.

Originality/value

The study is among few primary studies that identify and analyze the BC adoption in health-care industry.

Abstract

Purpose

Health tourism is a relatively new branch of international tourism that has developed more rapidly than other tourism sectors in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the effect of government supports on health tourism development by considering the mediating role of internal and external infrastructures.

Design/methodology/approach

The study population consisted of all experts of two hospitals in Iran, which are frequently visited by foreign tourists (N = 151). A questionnaire, developed by combining standard and researcher-made questionnaires, was used to collect the data. The confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) model was developed in SmartPLS 3 to test the hypotheses.

Findings

The main hypothesis test results indicated that government supports positively affect the development of health tourism. Internal and external infrastructures were also found to mediate the relationship between government supports and health tourism development. In addition, the sub-hypothesis test results showed that internal and external infrastructures are positively affected by government supports, which puts forth the development of health tourism. As the results explained, the most important aspects of internal infrastructures affected by government support were health service quality, cost of health services and applying advanced medical technologies, respectively. Also, different aspects of external infrastructures affected by government supports are as follows: economic, infrastructures and cultural factors.

Originality/value

This study is the first of its kind to examine the impact of both medical and non-medical factors on health tourism and signifies the crucial role of governments in the development of health tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and earnings management (EM) in US commercial banks and examines whether the chief executive officer (CEO) power can moderate this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

For a sample of American commercial banks covering 2009–2018, several equations and regressions are used to measure the main proxies for bank EM. The authors use the fixed effects model and generalized method of moment to investigate the CSR–EM relationship.

Findings

The authors find a significant positive relation between CSR and EM. Moreover, the authors find that CEO power moderates the CSR–EM relationship. This study also suggests a bidirectional relationship between CSR and EM.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this paper have important policy implications for policymakers, regulators and investors in their attempts to constrain EM practices and enhance the quality of financial reporting in US commercial banks.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature by exploring the relationship between CSR practices and firm EM by particularly focusing on banking. This study offers new insights into whether the association between CSR practices and EM is moderated by the CEO power. To the best of the knowledge, the relationship between CSR and EM is not studied yet with the moderating role of CEO power.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to address the main research gap related to the lack of sufficient information regarding the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in second Arab Spring wave in comparison to the first one. The authors analysed the role of ICTs via data regarding the access to ICTs and its influence on organization and spread of the anti-regime protests, i.e. regime change.

Design/methodology/approach

Crisis situations are unpredictable, complex and unexpected. The consequences produced by the crisis situations or events may be negative for an individual, community, organization or society as a whole. In the new millennium, ICTs have an important role in deep social crises. The new technologies enable not only the rapid spread of certain political ideas, spin information, but also the spread of misinformation. The control over ICTs in the crisis situations is crucial. The aim of this paper is to indicate effect of the use of ICTs in the crisis situations, i.e. political upheavals in 11 countries of the “Arab Spring”. The contribution of this paper is based on the development of a special theoretical model of analysis that represents the combination of the theoretical considerations in the field of ICTs, as well as the analysis in the field of transitology, i.e. democratization. The first part of the paper is focussed on the development of ICT transition theory of ICTs’ impact on the process of political change, setting the hypotheses and the explanation of methodological approach of the paper. The second part is related to the review and description of data regarding ICTs use, while the third one discusses the impact of the use of ICTs in organizing and spreading protests in the Arab world, in line with the defined theoretical framework. Finally, there are given the research results in terms of confirming or refuting the hypotheses through the analysis of Arab transition cases.

Findings

The authors confirmed the main hypothesis of the paper that the factors that determined the role of ICTs in first Spring, also, have determined the role of ICTs in second Spring wave. These factors include high access to ICT tools, weak regime's control over ICTs’ use and important cross-border networking with regional and international audience. All that formed the promotional role of ICTs in regime change in 8 of the 11 countries mentioned in the paper.

Originality/value

Apart from the developed special theoretical model and the analysis of new wave Arab Spring cases, the significance and originality of this paper is reflected in a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach that connects political changes and the use of ICTs in disseminating certain policies and ideas.

Abstract

Purpose

Every independent organization would sincerely like to have competent, loyal and engaged people, as engaged persons are typically those who have significant attachment and active involvement in their organization. Without engaging people, high quality and productivity will not be achieved. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of organizational culture derived from Tunisian customs of firm performance. Tunisian subcultures may not be represented in the national culture.

Design/methodology/approach

This study carefully examines the impact of organizational culture on firm performance of Tunisian small and medium-sized enterprises. Results from 100 organizations and companies were collected using questionnaires for data collection analysis from employees occupying various positions in different hierarchical levels. Statistics used are tested by ordinary least squared regression. Furthermore, response bias, validity and reliability were the most important points examined by researchers.

Findings

These results reveal and confirm that the charisma that has been perceived by employees as energy state has an impact on the performance of the organization, regardless of the moderating effect of the uncertainty of the environment. Moreover, this study also showed that organizational culture has a significant effect on firm performance as well as on the interpretation of the organization, which depends on charisma.

Originality/value

The implication is that even in a country with many subcultures, excellent management still needs to pay attention to the impact of national culture at the organizational level on job attitude, work ethics and employee engagement, which are however, very limited. It is expected that this finding can contribute to the organization in that management becomes aware of the personality of the employees during their recruitments, especially the chief characteristic of being energetic. Managers need to create a conductive and rewarding environment for individuals to contribute positively.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the knowledge on the underlying relation between trust, knowledge sharing (KS) and organizational commitment (OC) in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), by testing the mediator role of KS between trust and OC dimensions.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper addresses a sample of 582 top exporting Portuguese SMEs and it tests an original model using structural equation modeling following a partial least square approach.

Findings

Results show that trust positively and significantly influences KS and affective and normative OCs. KS partially mediates the relation between trust and affective OC.

Research limitations/implications

This study contributes to both the knowledge management and human resource development literatures, showing the relationship between variables from both bodies of literature. Some limitations apply, the study uses cross-sectional data that limit the conclusions about causality and some restrictions on the generalization of the results also apply due to the used sample.

Practical implications

Results show the importance of encouraging a trustful environment in SMEs on behalf of KS and OC dimensions. Human resource managers could profit from stimulating KS among employees that results in affective OC.

Originality/value

Findings show the relevancy of trust in SMEs and the role of KS that contributes to OC.

Abstract

A cross‐sectional survey of 300 male university students (18‐25 years) in the United Arab Emirates was carried out to study the relationship between obesity and some lifestyle factors. Obesity was determined using body mass index (weight/height2), with cut‐off of <25 and ≥25, to represent non‐obese and obese students, respectively. The overall prevalence of obesity was 35.7 per cent, which was higher than their counterpart female students. The risk of obesity was found to be greater among those who had a family history of obesity (relative risk, RR=1.88), watched television for more than four hours a day (RR=1.31), were smokers (RR=1.35), were not practising sport (RR=1.77) and had a car (RR=1.23). However, only family history of obesity was found to be statistically significant. The study suggests that social and lifestyle factors are important factors for the occurrence of obesity among male university students.
